What is the May Festival

Outline

The May Festival is an annual school festival of the University of Tokyo held every May at Hongo and Yayoi Campuses.
With over 500 groups participating and 160,000 people visiting, the May festival is one of the largest school festivals in Japan.

The atmosphere of Hongo Campus is usually calm. However, during the May Festival, the campus is enveloped in a special kind of excitement unique to school festivals. There are booths and performances in various locations worth visiting. Since the University of Tokyo excels in academic research, you can also enjoy the academic atmosphere through various academic projects.
The combination of the students' energy and the intellectual accumulation of the University of Tokyo emphasizes the uniqueness of the May Festival.

Food and drink is back on campus this year. Moreover, since reservations are not required, everyone is welcome to visit.
Please enjoy the entirely new May Festival.

Greetings from the Chairperson

Hello, I am Daichi Mishima, the Chairperson of the 96th May Festival Standing Committee.

Thank you very much for your interest in the May Festival.

Due to the effects of COVID-19, the May Festival has been held under restrictions on the number of visitors since the 93rd May Festival. We are very happy to announce that the 96th May Festival is back with its original lively atmosphere without reservations or restrictions on food and drink.

The theme of the 96th May Festival is “Flora”.

The passion of UT students adds splendidness to the campus in the floral season. You can see the richness of their springtime of life: enjoyable time with friends, days of hard study, processes of adventures, and so on. The beautiful moments you and UT students share in the festival will fill the campus with brilliance.

A nightingale is said to break the stillness of winter and declare the coming of spring. We view it as a messenger of Flora and entrust it with the honorable task of marking the start of the dreamlike two days that will exhibit the passion of UT students.

Welcome to the world of “Flora”, the splendid and brilliant world of wit and youthfulness.

Chairperson of the 96th May Festival Standing Committee

“Gogatsu-no-kaze”

About this song

“Gogatsu-no Kaze (May Wind)”, the official image song for the May Festival, has been played as the finale every year since it was created by the group “Shocho-no Taiin” in 2007.

The idea for creating “Gogatsu-no Kaze” came from a proposal by the committee to create a theme song that would bring a new breeze to the festival. The members of “Shocho-no Taiin”, a group which started out as a band for their high school festival, were enthusiastic about our idea and agreed to create an image song for the May Festival. The song expresses the joy and fulfillment of trial and error in expressing the hidden passion unique to Shouchou-no Taiin and their love for school festivals.

The theme song live performance by “Shocho-no Taiin” will be held at the Closing Ceremony of the 96th May Festival. The passionate love for the May Festival has been passed down generation after generation along with “Gogatsu-no Kaze”. Enjoy the music and the rich history behind it.
