The 95th May Festival

What is the May Festival??

Overview

The May Festival is one of the largest school festivals in Japan, held every May at the University of Tokyo Hongo and Yayoi Campuses.

Every year, about 500 clubs/associations exhibit projects, attracting over 160,000 visitors.
There are various kinds of projects, such as dance and musical performances, games and puzzles, academic and cultural exhibitions, food stalls, and so on.

During the festival, the fresh green avenue is lined with food stalls and creative performances are held everywhere, and the campus, which is usually calm and serene, becomes vibrant. Held at one of the greatest academic research institutions, the festival has various kinds of academic projects, allowing visitors to get a glimpse of groundbreaking research and academic achievements of the university.
The lively atmosphere created by students and accumulated knowledge of the university make the festival unique like no other.

For the last two years, the festival has been held online. However, the festival was a huge success, as it became easier for those who live far from the campuses to join from their home.

Message from the Chairperson of the Committee

Hello. I am Kurashima Keito, chairperson of the 95th May Festival Standing Committee.

For a long time, the May Festival has been an important annual occasion for UTokyo students to present the results of their activities. Even in the midst of the rapidly changing situation of COVID-19, we have held the past two May Festivals in an online format in order to protect such opportunities.

The 95th May Festival will be the first ever to be held in a hybrid format, combining face-to-face and online projects. We are now making preparations.

The theme of this year's May festival is ”Fusion”.

This theme is based on what May Festival is all about : a place where people from diverse backgrounds mix and harmonize with students, and where new values are created.

”Fusion” refers to the act of different things merging and harmonizing with each other. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, restrictions have been imposed and we have not been able to enjoy our student life as much as we would like. However, UTokyo students have been ingenious. While ”FUSING” new styles into existing ones.

We sincerely hope that you will gather on the campuses as well as on our website and encounter the various charms of UTokyo students.
